Felted rugs are sacred magical items embellished with secret stories. Here symbols of the NYUNGAR 6 SEASONS were combined with an ancient Siberian felt-rug making technique. These ancient ways of handling wool is extensively researched today by determined Hungarian felt-makers whom are aimed to preserve this slice of culture for the future and embed it into our present life again as an everyday creative craft and textile-art.
This particular rug was an amazing opportunity to bring two distinct cultures together. In ancient Australia feltmaking did not develop for the climate and the lack of sheep. But a very special Waldorf School in Western Australia respects the craft of feltmaking just as the culture of the local Aboriginal Australians, the Nyungar people. And they requested a giant wall-hanging from me to depict the Nyungar 6 seasons. The story of the six seasons and all the symbols to depict the world around themselves are vast, and it will need me to further unfold this subject. I will write a more detailed article about this shortly. This rug is about 110 cm in diameter.
I am happy to organise collaborative workshops to pass this knowledge forward from my Hungarian teachers with their permission and encouragement, or make a rug with whatever you have in mind to any venues, just send me an email to feltnomad@gmail.com.
